Indonesia welcomes birth of critically endangered Sumatran orangutan

JAKARTA, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia has welcomed the birth of a critically endangered male Sumatran orangutan in the Jantho Nature Reserve in Aceh Province, authorities said on Thursday.

Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said the newborn was named Badar, meaning full moon, inspired by its mother Bulan, whose name means "moon" in English.

"This birth is proof that through consistent habitat protection, we can restore populations of endangered endemic species," Antoni said.

Monitoring teams observed Bulan carrying her infant in the forest canopy and displaying strong maternal behavior.

According to conservation officials, the approximate one-month-old Badar is in good health, while its mother has adapted well to life in the wild.
