4 dead, 5 injured in oil tanker fire at Batam shipyard in Indonesia

JAKARTA, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed and five others injured after a fire broke out aboard a crude palm oil tanker docked at a shipyard on Batam Island in Indonesia's Riau Islands province, local media reported on Wednesday.

The victims were technicians working on the vessel Federal II, which was undergoing repairs at PT ASL Shipyard Indonesia in Batuaji area. The fire reportedly erupted at around 2:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday while the tanker was docked for maintenance.

Batuaji Police Chief Raden Bimo Dwi Lambang confirmed that nine people were involved in the accident. "Four victims died, five survived. The total number of victims is nine," he said.

The injured were receiving medical treatment.

Authorities said the blaze has been extinguished, and an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the fire.
