JAKARTA, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A pickup van plunged into a 30-meter-deep ravine in the Indonesian province of West Java on Monday morning, killing eight people and injuring nine others, local police said.
The tragic accident took place in Cibeureum village in the province's district of Ciamis. The vehicle was taking residents from the neighboring district of Majalengka to attend a wedding reception in Ciamis, the district police said.
Ciamis police chief Tony Prasetyo Yudhangkoro told local media that six passengers died at the scene and two others died at a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, nine others were still being treated at local hospitals and clinics.
He said that officers were still at the scene salvaging the vehicle. They made a preliminary conclusion that the cause of the accident was a brake malfunction.
