TOKYO -- Many schools in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa began temporarily closing Monday in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 among young people, the prefectural government said.

According to the local government in Okinawa, the closures are applicable to the majority of high schools and junior high schools as there has been a surge in COVID-19 infections among younger people. (Japan-Okinawa-School Closure)

JAKARTA -- Five people died after a wave smashed a speedboat carrying 30 people off Port Tarakan in Indonesia's province of North Kalimantan on Monday.

Seven of the passengers were reportedly children.

NEW DELHI -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the central government will provide free COVID-19 vaccines to all aged over 18 years old starting in June.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia, in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), has launched a new project to manage medical waste during the COVID-19 pandemic with China's financial and technical support through the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund (SSCAF), said a joint press statement on Monday.

SYDNEY -- The first batch of COVID-19 vaccines donated by the Chinese government arrived in Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu on Monday.
