LAGOS -- Nigerian police on Wednesday confirmed five bandits were killed in gun battles with law enforcement officers in the northwestern state of Katsina.

LAGOS -- At least 26 persons have been confirmed dead and 98 others are still missing after a boat capsized on Wednesday in the River Niger in north Nigeria, the police said Thursday.

Adamu Usman, the police chief of Niger state, confirmed the figures to reporters at a press briefing in Minna, the state capital, adding the boat with 150 passengers capsized on Wednesday morning in the river while on its way to a market in neighboring Kebbi state from a village in Niger state. KABUL -- Two people were wounded in a roadside bomb blast, targeting a provincial governor's vehicle in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province on Thursday, the local government confirmed.

JAKARTA -- At least five people were killed and three others suffered minor injuries as a pier collapsed in Indonesia's province of West Sumatra on Wednesday night, local official confirmed on Thursday.

YANGON -- A regional lawmaker of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) was shot dead in Myanmar's southern Mon state on Thursday, the party said in a statement.
