VIENTIANE -- Prime Minister of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith was elected as the new General Secretary of the country's ruling Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee at the communist party's 11th congress held in the capital Vientiane on Friday.
The three-day congress beginning Wednesday has elected the new members of the LPRP Central Committee for the 2021-25 term. Participating in the vote were 768 delegates at the congress, who represented a total of about 348,680 party members nationwide. (Laos-Party Congress-Leadership)

GHAZNI, Afghanistan -- Two people, including an assailant, were killed and seven Afghan army soldiers wounded in a suicide car bomb blast in eastern Ghazni province early Friday, a local government spokesman confirmed.
"A militant in a car bomb tried to assault an Afghan National Army operating base in Nani locality, along Kabul-Kandahar highway roughly at 2:30 a.m. local time Friday. JAKARTA -- At least 35 people have died after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia's West Sulawesi province, the National Disaster Management Agency said on Friday.
"Nine people died in Majene district, and 26 others in Mamuju district, bringing the total death toll to 35," said the West Sulawesi Provincial Disaster Management Agency's head Darno Majid. (Indonesia-Earthquake)

MUMBAI -- Eleven people died and another seven were injured in India's southwestern state of Karnataka after a mini-bus collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction on Friday morning.
