BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 5,057 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 907,758, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement Thursday.

Meanwhile, 124 new deaths were reported, taking the nationwide toll to 15,384.

MANILA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 147,526 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 4,002 new daily cases on Thursday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 70,387 after 1,403 more patients have survived the disease.

WINDHOEK -- Namibia's Minister of Health and Social Services Kalumbi Shangula said on Wednesday that his country is encouraged by China's efforts in finding a vaccine against COVID-19.

"There are several efforts being made especially in China to find vaccine so has Russia also pushed forward," Shangula said when responding to questions at the State House.

LONDON -- At least 922 healthcare workers in the United States have died of COVID-19, a recent report has found.

According to the report published by Lost on the Frontline, a joint project between U.S. nonprofit Kaiser Health News and UK newspaper the Guardian, 167 of the health workers have been identified, with their profiles published as part of the report.

TOKYO -- The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 206 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, marking the second straight day when infections topped the 200-mark.

While the number of new infections remained below the daily record of 472 infections reported earlier this month, concerns have remained high about the virus' resurgence in the capital of 14 million people since a state of emergency was lifted at the end of May.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 2,098 within one day to 132,816, with the death toll adding by 65 to 5,968, the health ministry said on Thursday.

According to the ministry, 1,760 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 87,558.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia on Thursday confirmed four new imported COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections in the country to 272, said a statement from the Health Ministry.

Three new cases were Cambodian men, aged between 26 and 30 years old, who arrived in the country last month from Russia via a connecting flight in Malaysia, the statement said.
