JAKARTA, Indonesia - A sword-wielding man is said to have launched an attack on a church congregation in Indonesia on Sunday.

Attacking the Sunday Mass, the 22-year-old man reportedly left four people, including a German priest injured.

The attacker also decapitated statues of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary during the incident in Sleman district in Yogyakarta province.

He was shot by the police subsequently and the reason behind the attack remains unknown so far.

Indonesia, which is the world's most populous Muslim nation has witnessed frequent attacks on Churches by Islamic militants.

Local police detective Fendi Timur said that counterterrorism police will be leading the investigation.

Videos posted on social media and featured in local media showed people in the church throwing books at the man as he lunged toward them with his sword.

Later, police officials revealed that the injured included a police officer who tried to subdue the attacker and the 81-year-old priest Karl Edmund Prier, a longtime resident of Indonesia.

They had reportedly suffered back, neck and head wounds and are believed to be in a stable condition.

Officials said that the suspect, who was identified with the name Suliyono, had been hospitalized.
