Republican conservatives force out gay worker for Romney
The Republican campaign for Mitt Romney has faltered as the candidate tries to widen his appeal to moderate voters.
A foreign policy adviser for the US Republican presidential nominee has resigned following a barrage of complaints from other Republicans.
Richard Grenell, longtime Republican foreign policy spokesman, was forced out by religious and social conservatives for being openly gay.
Mr Grenell submitted his resignation following the criticism by anti-gay members from within Republican ranks.
US media has reported the social conservatives who make up the party's base brought the issue to a head following inflamed discussions on Grenell's open-gay status.
While the Romney campaign has issued a statement suggesting it tried to talk Grenell out of leaving, it is believed he left to avoid harm to the campaign.
Grenell was also director of communications for US ambassadors to the United Nations during the George Bush presidency.
