Radical Indonesian cleric faces terrorism trial

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Indonesia's best-known radical Islamic cleric went on trial Monday on charges of forming a terrorist cell to plot high-profile assassinations and attacks on foreigners in the world's most populous Muslim nation. Abu Bakar Bashir, 72, faces a maximum penalty of death if found guilty. "These charges against me are fabricated," the smiling, white-bearded imam said before arriving at the tightly guarded South Jakarta District Court in an armored personnel carrier. "All I ever wanted to do was defend Islam." Indonesia, a mostly moderate and secular nation of more than 237 million people, has been hit by a string of suicide bombings blamed on Jemaah Islamiyah, the al-Qaida-linked network co-founded by Bashir just over a decade ago.
